6 Questions you Should ask your Photographer before booking!

Are you thinking about booking a photography session?  There are lots of options out there and while looking through a portfolio and pricing is often a big part of the selection process, don't forget these 6 questions you should ask your photographer before you book a session!

1.  How long have you been a photographer?  The longer a photographer has been in business, the more likely it is that it’s not just a hobby for them. They will have more experience and should be able to help and guide you during the process from questions before you book until you have your products from your session.

2.  Which types of photography do you specialize in?  It’s fairly uncommon for a photographer to specialize in multiple types of photography as they often only specialize in one or two genres.  For example, a photographer who specializes in newborn photography might not be the best candidate to shoot wedding photos unless they have the experience in doing so.  Those photographers that specialize in a special field typically have extra experience and education than those that don’t specialize.

3.  Do you have many repeat clients or reviews? This is a great test of not only the quality of a photographer’s work but of their customer service too.  It’s not always just about having a photography session, it’s also customer service, what else do they do for you?  Are they good with working with kids, newborns, families with young or older kids, extended family session, etc.  Ask for recommendations, read reviews, and talk to the photographer.

4.  What is your policy on booking a session and what about rescheduling?  An experienced photographer will definitely have a policy in place when it comes to booking or rescheduling a photography session.  A photographer with policies indicates that they have experience with different types of customers and situations and have created policies accordingly.  Don’t let upfront payments or contracts scare you away, this is common practice in the photography field.  It protects both you and the photographer.

5.  Have you had any experience with (name your specific concern)?  If you have any specific concerns regarding your photo session such as the photographer’s ability to work with a special needs child for example, find out if they have ever handled that type of situation before. Do not dismiss a photographer and their abilities based on their answers to your concerns. If given adequate notice, an experienced photographer should be able to deal with any situation you present them. This is the hallmark of a true pro.

6.  Silent Question: Use your gut to judge their personality and rapport. A photographer’s main job is to capture emotions and moments. Spend the time to have a quick phone call or meeting with your photographer if that is an option.  If your photographer doesn’t mesh well with you on the phone or in person, chances are you and your family will not mesh well with them at your session and this will show in your photos.
